FAQs

If the answer to your question is not listed below, please email us at info@saloonsmp.com and we’ll answer all your SMP questions you have.

  • SMP has quickly become such an effective hair loss solution because of its consistently natural and ultra realistic results. Saloon SMP prides itself on the ability to seamlessly replicate each individual hair follicle by colour matching your skin tone, hair colour and follicle size, as well as take into account the clients age and stage of hair loss to create a perfect match for each client that looks completely natural, blended seamlessly into your existing hair.

  • If you’re unsure of what shape hairline will suit you, we can assist. We have a barbering/hairdressing background so our experience on how to fit a hairline to head shape and age, means we’ll recommend what’s best. Over the course of your sessions you can also adjust and tweak your hairline.

  • Our pricing is based on the level of hair loss, which is different for each client, and the size of the area needing to be covered. Typically, client’s can expect treatment costs to range between $1,300 – $4,000 for density or full hairline creation.

We recommend setting up a free and confidential, no obligation consultation so we can evaluate your case and provide a personalised price quote based on your hair loss needs.

  • Depending upon the pattern and extent of the thinning hair, some clients are able to maintain a longer length of hair. SMP can help thicken areas so that less of the scalp is seen showing through. However, if there is a strong pattern of hair loss or just not a lot of hair density left, the client is recommended to change hairstyles.

  • Located in the picturesque town of Airlie Beach, Queensland, our saloon provides the perfect environment for you to embark on your SMP journey. With sunny weather and a serene atmosphere, Airlie Beach offers a rejuvenating setting that complements the transformative experience of SMP.

Our studio is a private space that only caters to SMP services. This means your sessions are completely dedicated to you and your SMP experience.

  • Yes! Clients with grey hair can benefit from the SMP procedure. First, clients are advised to cut their hair short. This makes the grey hair roots blend with the natural shades of grey. Grey hair becomes more visible as it grows longer.

Secondly, we use a grey-scale pigment that can be adjusted to match lighter hair tones. We create a lighter mixture to blend with existing grey hairs. This applies to clients with thinning grey hair who want a density treatment as well.

  • Yes!

Clients who may be thinning and like to salon colour their hair can absolutely benefit from the SMP procedure. No matter what colour your hair is, everyone’s hair follicle is a shade of grey. This is what we as SMP artists base your pigment colour off. So if you have freshly dyed blonde hair, your hair follicle is still a shade of grey and this is what we will be replicating in your sessions.

Secondly, we use a grey-scale pigment that can be adjusted in shade to blend with lighter hair tones. We simply create a lighter dilution for blending into the existing hair. The result will create fuller looking hair that blends seamlessly into your existing hair.

  • SMP treatments can last up to 10 years! On completion of the final session, you should expect to see the strength of the colour for many years. The pigments used by Saloon are very stable once implanted into the skin. This is due to the absence of oils (glycerine, witch hazel, etc). This ensures the treatment will in general not require re-application for a number of years. However, over time with exposure to sun, individual skin health and natural skin shedding, slight fading may occur. This is normal, and why we offer refresher sessions to touch up and refresh the dots years on.

Touch ups are a simple procedure requiring only a few hours to complete and once again bring the treatment back to looking like new. We see most of our clients come in around 2-5 years for their refresher.

Saloon SMP offer a 12 month guarantee to cover for any fading, adjustments to hairline, or any areas that may need a little more blending within the first year of your treatment. You can ask about this when you chat with on our artists.

  • Each treatment takes 2-4 sessions depending on the extent of your hair loss. How the skin heals, its condition and your aftercare will also play a factor in how many sessions are needed. Each session is about 2-5 hours long and spaced 7-14 days apart for sessions 1 and 2, and 2-4 weeks apart for session 3. Saloon will follow up with clients 4-6 weeks after your last session for any final blending or 4th sessions.

  • Instantly!

SMP is a process in which the artist replicates your existing hair follicles by placing colour matched pigment into the upper part of the dermal layer of your skin (the papillary layer). Using a specific SMP machine and micr-needles, just like a tattoo, the result is instant. Each session, we layer more and more dots in order to gain a completely realistic hairline that blends seamlessly into your existing hair.

    Voilà!

  • The majority of clients who have undergone this procedure have told us that after the first 20 minutes they get used to the sensation. Each client has a different experience, but SMP is quite tolerable. Because SMP penetrates the skin with a micro needle that is approximately 0.2mm in diameter at the insertion depth, there is very little bleeding, if any. There will however be an amount of redness that usually subsides over the following few hours. The pain is generally rated between a 2-5 out of 10. A numbing cream can be used for clients who have a low pain tolerance.

  • Our consultations are free, confidential and no obligations. Our most preferred consultation is in-person, however, if travel permits this, a scheduled FaceTime or WhatsApp eMeet is sufficient.

In your consultation, you’ll chat with one of our SMP artists where we’ll answer all your questions you have regarding SMP, the treatment and process, etc. We will discuss your hair loss goals and how SMP can assist with achieving the look you’re after.

After assessing your hair loss in person or via images, Saloon will put together a Treatment Plan and Quote so you can then move forward on how you’d like to proceed with your journey to combatting hair loss.

  • In most cases, yes. SMP can compliment your other hair loss solutions. This is something that we would discuss during your consultation so you can manage that as part of your treatment plan.

  • Aftercare for the most part is simple: Take sensible precautions in the sun, keep the scalp clean, dry, and moisturise as needed.

Because SMP pigment is only deposited at a more superficial layer of skin, failing to follow through with aftercare may cause uneven healing, affect the overall appearance of the treatment and result in needing additional sessions. It’s important to take care to follow these steps to ensure the best healed results and the longevity of your treatment.

If you have naturally oily, dry or sensitive skin then we adjust your aftercare accordingly.

  • You should refrain from strong sun exposure within the 3-5 days prior to treatment, especially if you are prone to burning. Your scalp may be sensitive, causing pain during treatment and may also be rejective to pigment. If your scalp is sunburned on the day of treatment, we may need to reschedule your appointment.

A general rule of thumb for SMP and the sun is:

    1. No sunlight for 7 days after each session

    2. Refrain from strong sunlight for 3-5 days leading up to the session

    3. Wearing a breathable hat is the best option

    4. Sunscreen only before SMP - avoid using sunscreen during the healing process if possible and wear a breathable hat instead.

  • We recommend no heavy sweating or intense exercise for 2-4 days after your SMP treatment as this interrupts the healing process.

Likewise, with chlorinated water (or sea water), it’s best not to submerge your head for a minimum of 3 weeks after your treatment.

  • After SMP, most individuals can resume their regular activities without significant downtime. There is no need for a lengthy recovery period, making SMP a convenient option for busy lifestyles. Clients will need to refrain from excessive sweating for 3 days and strong sunlight which are the main 2 crucial steps to follow.

  • Yes!

We use our specialised SMP technique to deposit colour matched pigment into the scar to reduce visibility by 70-85%.

  • For individuals dealing with alopecia, our SMP is a great and safe solution to gain back that confidence. Alopecia can be emotionally challenging, but our specialised SMP treatments provide a natural-looking solution. SMP replicates the appearance of real hair follicles, effectively camouflaging the effects of alopecia.

During the consultation process we discuss what type of alopecia you have and assess how SMP can assist your hair loss.

  • Yes. Even though SMP is not a medical procedure, we are penetrating the skin with a needle and placing pigment into the upper dermal layer of the skin. As a whole, SMP is a very safe treatment, however, your health is important when taking on any new form of treatment that effects your skin or body.

It is important as artists to be aware of any medical conditions you have or if you’re taking any particular medication to ensure you are not at risk with or during this treatment. Sometimes a doctors clearance may be required for clients with certain health conditions or illnesses.

During the consultation is when you can inform us of any medical history that may effect the outcome of the treatment and we will ask certain questions on our medical questionnaire prior to your treatment.

  • Depending upon the pattern and extent of the thinning hair, some clients are able to maintain a longer length of hair. Scalp pigmentation can help thicken areas so that less of the scalp is seen. However, if there is a strong pattern of hair loss or much hair density left, the client is recommended to shave it shorter and consider a new hairstyle.
